Meddling Mage
    Color= Multi Type= Creature - Human Wizard Cost= WU PS(R)/AR(R)
    Text (PS/AR+errata): 2/2. ; As ~this~ enters the battlefield, name a nonland card. ; The named card can't be cast. [Oracle 2009/07/08]
  • You name a card during the resolution of this spell, at the same time it is being put into play. Once you name the card, there is no chance for any player to respond to this choice before the "can't be played" effect takes hold. [Planeshift FAQ 2001/01/26]
  • The named card can be put into play by a spell or ability, it just cannot be played normally. [Planeshift FAQ 2001/01/26]
  • The effect lasts as long as this card is in play. [DeLaney 2001/02/12]
  • The effect of this card does not affect cards being played face down. [Onslaught FAQ 2002/09/24]
  • Spells of that name that are already on the stack when the ability takes effect are not affected. [Alara Reborn FAQ 2009/04/30]
  • Although the named spell cannot be played (aka "cast"), cards of that name can still be put directly into play by spells and abilities. [Alara Reborn FAQ 2009/04/30]
  • Some cards (such as Isochron Scepter) let you play a copy of a card. A copy of a card isn't actually a card, so Meddling Mage can't stop this. [Alara Reborn FAQ 2009/04/30]
  • Note - This card was creature type "Wizard" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Human Wizard".
  • Note - This card was designed by Chris Pikula after winning the 2000 tournament in Sydney.
